NEW POSTINGS

LOOKING FOR A FEW GOOD 4TH GRADE PARENT VOLUNTEERS
Westerly Creek is excited to hold its first annual 5th grade Continuation Ceremony on Wednesday, May 23rd at 4:30pm. To prepare for this exciting event, we are seeking a few 4th grade parents who can help out with logistics, so that 5th grade parents can sit back and enjoy their students’ big day. Ideally, this will be a tradition you too can enjoy next year when your child graduates from 5th grade. Regardless, we are looking for help with the following tasks: set-up, clean-up, passing out of programs, errand running (picking up materials), and manning a refreshment station. If you are interested in donating your afternoon to help this cause, please contact Assistant Principal, Marnie Moody Cooke.

WCE ANNUAL PJ DAY & STUFFED ANIMAL COLLECTION
Thank you Westerly Creek students, teachers and families for contributing to our two successful drives for Denver Road Home and Loving Hugs! We raised over $500 (five hundred and thirty three dollars and fifty cents to be exact) for the Denver Road Home collection that supports Denver's initiative to reduce homelessness. Over 200 "stuffies" were collected for the Loving Hugs non-profit organization who delivers the stuffed animals to children who are orphans. Please see for yourself the pictures taken from around the world of the children receiving their "hug" last year.

GIRL SCOUT COOKIES ARE HERE!
Your Westerly Creek Girl Scout Troops will be selling cookies after school beginning Thursday February 16th.  They will be on both ends of the school from 3:45 to 4:45, just look for the girl scout vests.  Come and get them as there are only a few weeks left and then they will be gone!  The girls will be selling every Thursday through March 1st.  Each troop has their own pet project that they are donating either money or cookies to, so please come and support our troops by buying cookies!

HOLIDAY PARTY, DECORATION & CONDUCT GUIDELINES COMMITTEE
Christmas Trees? Menorahs? Kinaras? WCE would benefit on having guidelines for conduct during the holidays.  Would you like to assist with this task?  A variety of cultures point of view would be helpful. Please contact Tiffany Mayor Burke (1st & 4th grade parent) at tiffanymburke@comcast.net or (c) 720-272-2672.

WCE FOOD PANTRY
We wish to give a huge thanks to our school community for your incredible support of the Weekend Back Pack program. We continue to need contributions. The specific food items that we need include: cereal/oatmeal, Mac and cheese, canned tuna/chicken breast, pasta, canned spaghetti sauce, rice, beans, canned fruit and canned vegetables, peanut butter. We would also love any and all monetary contributions for the account that we have at the Food Bank of the Rockies. Checks can be made payable to Westerly Creek PTA with "food pantry" in the memo line.

We are also in need of nutritional snack items for consumption during the school day.  Suggested snack ideas include Goldfish or Bunny crackers, Pretzels, Granola Bars, Dried Fruits, Crackers, Graham Crackers, Baked whole grain chips, microwave popcorn. Individually packaged items would be best for distribution purposes.

Lastly, we want to follow up on our winter coat and accessory drive from December.  We were able to help all WCE families in need as well as share 15-20 extra large trash bags full of items to Smith Elementary.  Our school community is so very generous and our friends at Smith Elementary were thrilled with our contributions.  Thank you so much for your response!
We also wish to recognize Ansley Young and Johanna Ladis for their assistance in delivering the items to Smith Elementary - please take a moment and thank them when you see them.

If you are a family in need of assistance, please talk to your child's teacher, Jill Corcoran or Marnie Cooke If you have any questions about this program, please contact Ann Margaret Williams or Jo-Nell Herndon.

NEWS YOU MAY HAVE MISSED

A SAFETY REMINDER FOR DRIVERS

This is a reminder for parents/caretakers who drive their children to school - Pedestrians have the right of way in cross walks (the law). Please keep this in mind as you approach the school, especially rounding the corners to the school from 26th Ave (there is no stop sign on 26th near the skate board park, but there is a pedestrian cross walk there). If you see people crossing the street, please stop your car and let the them safely cross. This is especially important after the recent snowfall, the roads are slippery for the kids and the cars! You'll also notice reduced speed signs as you approach the school from all directions. Thank you for keeping our neighborhood and school commute safe for all!

ON THAT NOTE....NOW FORMING: WCE SAFETY COMMITTEE

This essential committee is now forming! Parents/caretakers should look at getting involved now to help prioritize safety issues and roll out any procedures at our school. Please contact Amanda Meyer to volunteer your talents!

GIRLS ON THE RUN REGISTRATION GOING ON NOW
Girls on the Run will start the week of March 5th. SPAGHETTI DINNER HOSTED BY KIDSHELP

TCAP (FORMERLY CSAP) TESTING SCHEDULE
The time of year for TCAP testing is just around the corner! This year, 3rd grade will be taking the reading TCAP during the 2nd week of February. 3rd grade Math and Writing, as well as the 4th and 5th grade testing of all content areas will be during the first two weeks on March (click here for complete schedule). Please note that the name of the assessment has changed; CSAP is now referred to as TCAP or the Transitional Colorado Assessment Program. It is important to note these dates in your personal calendars to help plan trips and appointments accordingly so that your student is present for all testing sessions.

JUMP ROPE FOR HEART GOING ON NOW UNTIL MARCH 2nd
If your child decides to raise money for Jump Rope for Heart, his/her envelope is due by March 2nd. Ms. Katie sent home a packet with a letter from her and an envelope that explains how to raise money. Your child knows that they are under no obligation to raise money and that the most important part of this Unit is raising awareness about Heart Health.

On February 24th there will be a Jump Roping Dance Team that will come to the school and perform for the kids. 2:00-2:45 (Kinder-2nd), 2:45-3:30 (3rd-5th). Parents are welcome to come and watch.

If there is a family in our school community that has had an experience with a heart transplant, heart surgery, or anything related with heart and they would like to share, please let
Ms. Katie know and you can set something up where you can share with your child’s class or the whole school. The kids would benefit so much from hearing a real life story!

Thanks so much and remember… “You can have healthy heart its easy as 1 ,2, 3… Eat healthy stuff, move around enough, and stay tobacco free”. –American Heart Association
