  • WHAT IS DIRECT GIVING?
Direct Giving is one of the most important ways the PTA makes a difference at our school. The money raised during this fundraising campaign is a large part of the PTA's grant to the school each year, helping "fund the gap" between the funds received from DPS and the money the school receives from the school district and the amount of money we need to operate our budget. This money keeps paraprofessionals in the classrooms, interventionists in the school, provides the school with updated technology in all of the classrooms, and much more!

IT'S EASY:  Attend an upcoming direct giving event OR donate online here via a one-time donation or arrange for monthly payments (auto-pay).

    AUCTION | APRIL 11, 2015 | GRAND HYATT DENVER

ACQUISITIONS NEEDED!  Deadline has been extended because we need your help!  Our auction is always FABULOUS based on the creative and fun things/activities that folks can bid on at the event, so PLEASE consider donating items or services to the auction. So leave the kids at home, don your best black & white attire and support our amazing school with your generous giving spirit on Saturday, April 11th from 6:00--10:30 pm at the Grand Hyatt Denver downtown. Go to our auction page for more details.

You can also contact Heather or Liz if there's someone you'd like to nominate! A big thank you also needs to go out to all of the people that are re-upping their positions for next year. We greatly appreciate your dedication. There really is something for everyone in the PTA, so please reach out if you'd like to get more involved in our amazing school next year.

SAVE THE DATE: The nominating committee will present their slate of candidates to the general membership for elections on March 10th. Please make plans to join us for the next PTA meeting and cast your vote!

FUNDRAISER: SESSION KITCHEN | MAR 11
Session Kitchen, one of 5280 Magazine’s “Best New Restaurants,” is hosting our next fundraising restaurant night on Wednesday, March 11th. FUNDRAISER: PINTS FOR HALF-PINTS | MAR 20 | MU BREWERY | 6-9 PM

SPIRIT DAY FRIDAY | STARTING MARCH 6
Every Friday, starting on March 6th, all students are welcome to participate in Spirit Day Friday! Students who would like to participate need to wear their WCE spirit wear (aka the colored field day shirts or any WCE shirts they own) or a TON of the color of their grade. The class with the most spirit in grades K-2 and 3-5 (based on a percentage of total participation per class) will be announced during the CREEK Kid announcements on Friday afternoon and earn Minnie Winnie (a 16 inch stuffed wolf) for the whole week! At the end of the year the class that shows the most school spirit throughout the year (the class who got to spend the most time with Minnie Winnie) will earn a classroom pizza party!

The competition will start on Friday, March 6th. WCE spirit wear shirts will be sold at school for $7.00 on the following days:
    • Before school on February 20th from 8:15-8:55 am
    • At the 4th grade evening music performance on February 26th
    • Before school on February 27th from 8:15 – 8:55 am
Westerly Creek is the BEST — let’s show some SCHOOL SPIRIT and have fun doing it! If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask!
    Mrs. Stromberg (2nd Grade Teacher)

CAMPAIGN:  SAFETY FIRST, SAFETY ALWAYS | ONGOING
Beginning October 27th, the school Safety Committee will be engaging in a new campaign called Safety First, Safety Always. It will tie in many safety initiatives for students and families including safety around the Kiss and Go, Halloween, Internet Safety, home safety awareness, and more! The campaign has been embraced by DPS senior leadership, the Facilities Safety Department, and local municipality services. Please join us in our efforts so we can all enjoy a safe educational environment and community.

NEW TO WCE: MILK CAPS FOR MOOOLA
Earn FREE MONEY for Westerly Creek!  Our school is now participating in Longmont Dairy's Milk Caps for Mooola program, which helps earn money for our school and students. Longmont Dairy milk caps are worth $0.05 each and are redeemable for cash. Here's how you can help:
    • Drink Longmont Dairy milk.  Eligible cap products include: Milk (regular, chocolate & strawberry), Half & Half, Whipping Cream, Orange Juice, Lemonade, Raspberry Lemonade, and Classic or Cinnamon Eggnog.
    • Save the bottle caps. Save as many as you can - from your bottles, or collect them from your family and neighbors.
    • Bring your bottle caps to school. Put them in the collection box located near the school office, next to the Box Top collection box.
Contact Rosemary Jackson with any questions.

    KING SOOPERS GROCERY CARD
Our King Soopers program is the easiest way to raise money for our school. The WCE King Soopers grocery card remains active as long as you regularly load it. WCE earns money on every reload - 5% in fact, and you can reload up to $500 at a time. To get a King Soopers Grocery Card tagged to WCE just join the PTA and it's included in your membership, or purchase one for face value of $5 from the PTA. You can give them as gifts too! For more information on the King Soopers Grocery Card program visit the PTA website fundraising page or contact Rosemary Jackson.

    WANTED: Volunteers for Kiss-and-Go
We are looking for committee members and volunteers to help with the Kiss-and-Go program.  If interested, please contact Maggie Broadrick.

REDUCE SUMMER LEARNING LOSS | SEAC Resource Fair
On behalf of the DPS Office of Student Services and the DPS Office of Family and Community Engagement, all DPS Families are invited to attend the SEAC Resource Fair, on March 7, 2015, from 10:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at Manual High School. This fair is an effort to help parents keep their children from losing important academic gains throughout the summer months. Did you know that students can lose up to 2.6 months of grade level equivalency in math and 3 months of grade level equivalency in reading over the summer? Come learn how to keep your child engaged, active, and learning during the summer months so they can return to school on track. Light breakfast will be served and childcare for ages 3-12 will be provided.

MORE INFO:  Go to face@dpsk12.org or contact Jesse_Martinez@dpsk12.org or 720-423-2275.

    WELLNESS COMMITTEE NEWS
We are lucky to have a team of people working together to come up with ways to make our community of learners healthier, more active, and happier! One of this year's goals is to have healthier celebrations at school (birthday’s, holidays, special events, snack time, etc). We could use your help in making this happen! When your child has a celebration or it’s your turn for snack and your deciding what to bring in, instead of choosing those foods packed with sugar, try picking something different. Here are some alternatives:  Popcorn, baby carrots with a dip, pita chips, salted cucumber slices, kale chips, pretzels, trail mix, sunflower seeds, fruit chips, hummus, sugar snap peas, edamame, oranges, blueberries, cherries, pomegranates, granola bar, dark chocolate, fruit leather, yogurt, parafait, frozen yogurt, graham crackers, fig Newtons, fruit cup, banana bread, sugar free jello, or kashi cookies. Thanks so much for your support in arming our students with the needed energy they require to get through their day.

NEW SECURITY PROCESS AT FRONT DESK!
Parents, volunteers, and visitors please know that because our security badges are not being returned, you will now need to submit your keys or your ID at the front desk in order to receive a badge to access your child’s classroom or the building at large, except on days when there are large programs and you receive a sticker. Badges are expensive and since they are not being returned, we need to move to a different procedure to ensure they are returned. Please continue to check for school security badges that you may have inadvertently worn home. These badges must be returned to the Westerly Creek Elementary office immediately.

    FOOD PANTRY DONATIONS
WCE has an incredible Community Outreach team that provides backpacks full of food to several kids that attend Westerly Creek. We need your help to stock our food pantry so we don't need to go outside the school to help fill these backpacks. In the east lobby you'll find a shopping cart. Please drop non-perishable items in there as often as you can. Favorites include meals in a can (stew, chili, etc), tuna or canned meats, peanut butter, jelly, macaroni and cheese kits, low-sugar cereals, canned fruits and vegetables, raisins, unsweetened applesauce, pretzels, granola bars, or anything you and your family would enjoy. Make a fun shopping trip of it and have your kids fill a bag! We had a few kids last year who asked for nonperishable groceries in lieu of gifts and their birthday parties and brought in WAGONS of food. Make it fun. Involve the family. Help our students! This committee still needs volunteers. If you're able to help, please contact Jo-Nell Herndon.
