Direct Giving is one of the most important ways the PTA makes a difference at our school. The money raised during this fundraising campaign is a large part of the PTA's grant to the school each year, helping "fund the gap" between the funds received from DPS and the money the school receives from the school district and the amount of money we need to operate our budget. This money keeps paraprofessionals in the classrooms, interventionists in the school, provides the school with updated technology in all of the classrooms, and much more!

IT'S EASY:  Attend an upcoming direct giving event OR donate online here via a one-time donation or arrange for monthly payments (auto-pay).

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!  This fun event ~ the pinnacle of WCE's fundraising efforts ~ will take place on Saturday, April 11, 2015 at the Grand Hyatt Denver. (Many thanks to our WCE family for securing us this great venue!!)  Lots of volunteers are needed to ensure an amazing event, so please contact Cathy Kautzman if you can help.  And remember to check future updates for additional details.

    *** PTA NEWS ***

Each year, local girl scout troops have sponsored/provided holiday gifts to WCE children and their families that are part of our food pantry program.
This year we hope you can help spread some cheer!  Our school social worker identified families & children with a small wish list. Each item is listed below in the SlyReply link. Sponsoring families can sign-up, purchase the item and return it to the front office in a winter/holiday gift bag (please do not wrap gifts) by WEDNESDAY December 17th. Please be sure to label the bag with the FAMILY & CHILD NUMBER. Contact JoNell Herndon if you have any questions.

Thank you for your continued generosity and support of our WCE family!

District interim assessments in literacy and math take place three times a year. Your child’s teacher(s) will be administering these assessments, which take place in October, December and late April/early May (separate from CMAS, formerly called TCAP). During this time each class will administer 2 literacy (one reading and one writing) and/or 1-2 math assessments, depending on the grade. The information gathered helps inform instruction in the classrooms and is an additional data point that provides information to teachers about student progress. Please help us by ensuring your child doesn’t have appointments scheduled, gets adequate sleep, has a good breakfast, and is on time and ready to go on assessment days.

We're thrilled to announce the Westerly Creek directory is moving online! If you've been in the directory before, you'll receive an email prompting you to verify your information as well as your display preferences. If you filled out a green directory form at registration, that information has been updated in the system. If you're new to WCE and did not complete the directory form, USE THIS LINK to add your information to the directory. ALL FAMILIES need to verify their information by December 31! If you have any questions please contact Heather Roesink.

WHAT'S THE DIRECTORY? If you're new to WCE, the directory is a listing of family information: your name, children(s) name, class, address, phone numbers, emails, etc. It's always optional – what to include and share with others – but it's a great way to set up playdates. It's always been a printed book, but we're excited to bring it online so you can access the directory from a computer or even your mobile device! And if you're old school, you can easily print the directory from the website. We expect to deliver the final app to you in January 2015.

In addition to a night off from cooking, your participation in WCE's Restaurant Night earns money for our school because a percentage of what you spend comes back to WCE.  A total win-win for everyone!

Beginning October 27th, the school Safety Committee will be engaging in a new campaign called Safety First, Safety Always. It will tie in many safety initiatives for students and families including safety around the Kiss and Go, Halloween, Internet Safety, home safety awareness, and more! The campaign has been embraced by DPS senior leadership, the Facilities Safety Department, and local municipality services. Please join us in our efforts so we can all enjoy a safe educational environment and community.

Earn FREE MONEY for Westerly Creek!  Our school is now participating in Longmont Dairy's Milk Caps for Mooola program, which helps earn money for our school and students. Longmont Dairy milk caps are worth $0.05 each and are redeemable for cash. Here's how you can help:
    • Drink Longmont Dairy milk.  Eligible cap products include: Milk (regular, chocolate & strawberry), Half & Half, Whipping Cream, Orange Juice, Lemonade, Raspberry Lemonade, and Classic or Cinnamon Eggnog.
    • Save the bottle caps. Save as many as you can - from your bottles, or collect them from your family and neighbors.
    • Bring your bottle caps to school. Put them in the collection box located near the school office, next to the Box Top collection box.
Contact Rosemary Jackson with any questions.

Our King Soopers program is the easiest way to raise money for our school. The WCE King Soopers grocery card remains active as long as you regularly load it. WCE earns money on every reload - 5% in fact, and you can reload up to $500 at a time. To get a King Soopers Grocery Card tagged to WCE just join the PTA and it's included in your membership, or purchase one for face value of $5 from the PTA. You can give them as gifts too! For more information on the King Soopers Grocery Card program visit the PTA website fundraising page or contact Rosemary Jackson.

WANTED: 4th & 5th Graders for Chess Club
If your child is interested in participating in Chess Club, please contact Katherine Yeager.  The Chess Club will begin meeting Monday mornings before school starting in January – exact start date to be determined once we know how many students are participating.

    WANTED: Volunteers for Kiss-and-Go
We are looking for committee members and volunteers to help with the Kiss-and-Go program.  If interested, please contact Maggie Broadrick.

Parents, volunteers, and visitors please know that because our security badges are not being returned, you will now need to submit your keys or your ID at the front desk in order to receive a badge to access your child’s classroom or the building at large, except on days when there are large programs and you receive a sticker. Badges are expensive and since they are not being returned, we need to move to a different procedure to ensure they are returned. Please continue to check for school security badges that you may have inadvertently worn home. These badges must be returned to the Westerly Creek Elementary office immediately.

If you have an ECE3 going into an ECE4, an ECE4 going into Kindergarten, or a 5th Grader going into Middle School, you need to participate in the school choice process, which is made easier via the online form on the Parent Portal. Setting up a Parent Portal is easy:

Regional meetings are taking place throughout the month of December in various locations throughout DPS.  To measure and achieve our goal to make every school a great school, Denver Public Schools uses a variety of processes, such as the School Performance Framework (SPF), Strategic Regional Analysis (SRA), and the Call for New Quality Schools. This year, we will have five regional meetings aimed at building collective understanding and identifying areas for community input among this spectrum of processes and we need your help making them a success.

The goal of these regional meetings will be:
    • To share Denver Plan goals, discuss school performance in our regions and garner input for the Call for New Quality Schools grounded in the needs identified for each region
    • To strengthen connections throughout our engagement activities
    • To connect with families and community groups in your region around issues that matter to them

WCE 4th & 5th graders who wish to be serious competitors in the National Geographic Geography Bee should begin preparations now for the January competition. Visit the National Geographic Geography Bee website for multiple links with practice questions; an inexpensive app is also available for mobile devices. In January 2015, WCE students will have an opportunity to compete in the National Geographic Geography Bee. One student will be chosen as the school champion and that student will move on to the state qualifying round. One representative from Colorado will move on to the National Competition in Washington D.C. And that student could be from Westerly Creek!  Questions should be directed to Katherine Yeager.

    PARENT ENGAGEMENT NIGHT | DEC 3 | 5:30-6:30 pm
Our next PEN will take place on December 3rd, 5:30-6:30 pm in the Library. Coordinated by two fabulous WCE teachers, America Bateman and Alicia Fajohn, these educational sessions are dedicated to providing parents with tips and tools to enhance their child’s success in school and at home. If you would like to recommend topics most important to parents, please submit your ideas via the Parent Engagement Night Survey.

TOPIC: The Common Core Standards and How They Affect Your Child [Food and childcare provided.]

As you may know, the School Performance Framework (SPF) for Westerly Creek is now available to families.  You may view our SPF 2014 rating online HERE.

Attention Mathletes! It’s time for Math Olympiad, a nationwide math contest for 4th and 5th graders.  Any student who loves mathematics is welcome to attend the practices and competitions, which will be held at school on Friday mornings starting in mid-October and running through May. If your child is interested, please email Katie Yeager to sign up. See you there!

The updated 2014-15 WCE Parent Handbook is available and should be read thoroughly by all parents and families of WCE students. This handbook highlights and details important information about school policies and procedures, school communications, and parent expectations. Should you have any questions about the parent handbook or to request a printed copy, please contact the main office at 720-424-3160.

WCE has an incredible Community Outreach team that provides backpacks full of food to several kids that attend Westerly Creek. We need your help to stock our food pantry so we don't need to go outside the school to help fill these backpacks. In the east lobby you'll find a shopping cart. Please drop non-perishable items in there as often as you can. Favorites include meals in a can (stew, chili, etc), tuna or canned meats, peanut butter, jelly, macaroni and cheese kits, low-sugar cereals, canned fruits and vegetables, raisins, unsweetened applesauce, pretzels, granola bars, or anything you and your family would enjoy. Make a fun shopping trip of it and have your kids fill a bag! We had a few kids last year who asked for nonperishable groceries in lieu of gifts and their birthday parties and brought in WAGONS of food. Make it fun. Involve the family. Help our students! This committee still needs volunteers. If you're able to help, please contact Jo-Nell Herndon.
